Artist Statement

If someone were to tell me three years ago that I would one day be sitting at my computer searching for the words to describe my “art” and the process I go through to create it, I would have told them that they were absolutely stark raving mad!

The best I can do is tell you that art is something that seems to flow through me, I surprise myself with things I’ve painted and often look at them after they are completed and wonder “how did I do that?”. It is my theory that art is probably something that dwells at the core of every human. It is that tiny little voice that little children hear when they are busy using their crayons on the walls, and as they get reprimanded, they bury it. If it’s nurtured and encouraged, perhaps it would blossom. I cannot recall being punished for doing that, but I do recall our children getting into trouble for some of their more “creative” efforts! I wish that everyone who has ever wanted to paint, write, photograph, sculpt, weave or create will someday have that chance.

So, here I am. A self-taught artist continuing to gain experience and a stronger point of view with each piece I create. It’s difficult to explain what brought me to this place, at this time. After almost 40 years of both practicing and teaching dentistry, I find myself on this new trajectory. As a dentist, I was, of course well versed in many of the “elements” of art, form, shape, line, colour, value, space, and perspective. No one wants a dentist that can’t help them have a beautiful smile! I am extremely grateful to be able to experience this new passion on so many levels.

I hope you get as much joy out of seeing my work, as I get out of creating it.
